Mini (micro) photo shoot. What is it and is it for you?
So you have decided you want some “nice pictures of the kids” and are looking for a professional photographer when you come across something called the mini (or sometimes micro) session - oh and here is the clincher, it’s cheaper! So what is a mini session?
A mini session is just that, mini. It is shorter in time, usually less than one hour compared to a standard session which can run anywhere from 1.5 hrs to 3 hrs or even longer. To get a sense if this is the right type of session for you, I have listed out the pros and cons for you to make up your own mind from.
Great for young kids ie small attention spans as you can be in and out in about an hour
Can fit between other commitments
Handy for sessions of just one person especially if you don’t need multiple costume changes
Smaller investment initially
Less time means less images to choose from
Often don’t include any or many images in the session fee
Not enough time for larger groups where images of each individual are required
Less variety in the final images
So ask yourself, are you desperate for some professional images of the kids but know they have about a 15 minute attention span, then maybe this is the option for you. I certainly wouldn’t be looking at this option if you have teenagers who will each want their chance in the spotlight.
To my mind, what is most important is that a photographer does not forgo service just because they are offering a more cost effective investment option. Try to go for a photographer who offers some kind of pre-session consultation even if it is just a short chat on the phone. This allows them a chance to get to know you and learn about the people they are going to be photographing. How else can you ensure you take way images that show the real you and ensure genuine return on investment.
